Long layover at Malpensa: leave or stay at the airport?

A layover of many hours at Malpensa can be torture on the benches or a real break with a shower and a bed. It depends on how long it is and what time it is.

When it's worth leaving

  • Under 5-6 hours: stay at the airport; with security checks and transfers it's not worth it.
  • Between 8 and 12 hours, especially overnight: a bed 10 minutes away changes your trip.
  • Over 12 hours: sleep well and maybe pop over to Lake Maggiore or Milan.

What you need to know

To leave the airport you must be allowed to enter Italy (check visa and document requirements for your nationality) and, if your luggage isn't checked through to your final destination, collect it and check it in again. Plan to be back at least 2 hours 30 minutes before non-Schengen flights.

How it works with us

The private shuttle picks you up at arrivals and takes you back to departures, from 30 € per trip, at any hour. Self check-in lets you in from 15:00, at any hour, without waiting for anyone.

Arriving early in the morning?

Check-in is from 15:00; after 14:30 early entry is free, and between 13:00 and 14:30 it costs 20 €, subject to the cleaning schedule. You can leave your luggage for free in the inner courtyard.
